Chris Kilkus Featured on the Hungry Ones

without comments

I was featured a while back on a food blog called The Hungry Ones.  It’s a blog that interviews creative and business types, from photographers like me to comedians to web developers and more, on the foods they like to eat…. or, as the blog says:

The Hungry Ones is a collection of interviews with creative/innovative/bad ass people and the food they love to eat. There’s nothing more inspiring than finding out the people you respect, enjoy the very same things as you do.

1. Who are you what do you do?
I’m Chris Kilkus and I take pictures for a living. I’m based in Los Angeles and some of my clients include Forever21, bebe, BCBG, and other fashion companies.

2. Wheres you favorite place for lunch?
I’m not a big lunch person.  Usually save it for dinner.

3. Where’s your favorite place for dinner?
Toss up between Bazaar at the SLS or Melisse.  And I liked the Little Door too.  And Le Petite Cafe in Santa Monica.  Also Locanda Portofino on Montana in Santa Monica.  And Mozza. Okay, the list goes on…. I guess I have too many favorites and it just depends on my mood.  Dishes?  Best steak I ever had was at Mozza, which was a surprise.  Amazing uni past at Locanda Portofino. Bazaar had an uni dish that blew me away too… I need to go back there to be reminded of it.  At Melisse, everything was amazing.

4. Last meal would be?
I could never choose just one.  I might be able to narrow it down to one each from french, italian, japanese, mexican, thai and vietnamese?  But hopefully I will never have a “last” meal!!

The Cult of Style Blog Post about Chris Kilkus Photography

without comments

Thank you to the folks at the Cult of Style blog for publishing a shoot a did a little while back in a sunny and warm Los Angeles.  This was a test shoot I did with the fashion stylist Kate Riney and hair & make up artist Maria Nguyen.  Our model for the day was Noora Laapi.  I wanted to keep this a pretty loose shoot… just go out and have fun, look for nice spots and nice light and take some simple photos.  I added a the color effect in post to also give it a slightly retro california vibe.

Video Post Production and Color Grading Reel

without comments

Check out the post over on ambushpro.com about my friend Christian Stoehr’s Color Grading Reel.  One of the big problems with shooting video on the Canon 5d is that you don’t have much leeway in post on color and exposure adjustments….. but it’s amazing to see what how far he was able to take some of the footage we shot together!

Use Chris Kilkus Photographs as Wrapping Paper!

without comments

I was surfing through some fashion blogs and stumbled on this posting from Fashion Blog Mexico.  They show how to use pages from a magazine for wrapping paper, and happen to be using a magazine I shot for Forever 21 in their example.  Too funny!  I don’t know if I should be flattered or insulted!  Haha!

DIY Gift Wrapping with fashion magazine

You probably have around your house several old magazines that do not re-read but not get rid of them “just deal”, well I do that, but I recently saw the need to wrap a birthday present and thought recycle fashion magazine to wrap, to be different and a bit more friendly to the planet earth. This idea is fabulous now come the holidays, is a good way to be creative, save some money and recycle old magazines.

For this DIY you need:

– Fashion Magazine
– Safe (I used one of Boa Accessories, truly a gift wrapped)
– Scissors
– Tape
– Ribbon for decoration gift

Step by step
1. Flip through the magazine and select two or three pages and you want to use as many great your gift. I chose a two-page editorial. Arráncalas and cut the edge to become straight.

2. Une pages you cut with tape, what you see in the image is what is on the inside of the gift, you can paste more pages up or sideways as you need, the idea is to build a “statement” to put wrapping paper the box.

3. Now wrap the box as if it were any typical gift paper.

4. Once wrapped the box you can decorate it with ribbons, you can do it with a thick cloth ribbon and make a big bow top, or decorate with ribbon wrapping paper and put a cut some figure in the center.

Yo recorté una flor de una de las páginas de la revista y la use como centro para los listones. No te preocupes si el corte no es perfecto, esos detalles son parte del encanto.

Ready! No one will have a gift wrapped like yours. This DIY was inspired by my sister, who is a freak of the environment and forces me to recycle, I thought it was more about a gift of recycled wrapping paper and elegant chignon, and apparently I managed.

Canon 5D MarkIII… enh. I miss my 1ds MarkIII. By Chris Kilkus

with one comment

I’ve owned the Canon 5D series of cameras since their introduction. It was a back up for my 1ds MarkII and later 1ds MarkIII. And it was also a nice camera to have for just playing around or going on vacation… compact and lightweight, but still with a full frame sensor. When the MarkII was introduced it also took over as my main motion camera. But the 1ds MarkIII was the ideal camera for my fashion and advertising photography.

So I was really looking forward to a new version of the 1ds coming out with hopefully a larger buffer and a faster tether connection that would give me the ability to shoot even quicker.. an important part of capturing the energetic style of lifestyle and fashion photography that I do. And a few more megapixels would have been nice too since some ad clients get nervous about not having enough information to work with.  What I really wanted was for the 1ds MarkIII to up it’s game and go after the medium format digital back market, but in the fast and compact package of DSLR.

Well, what a let down when the 1dx was introduced! I wrote a blog post here about my feelings on the new camera…..

Chris Kilkus – Road Trip Promo Video

without comments

Here is a little film we shot a while back… like always we did it at the same time as a still photography shoot. We shot using the Canon 5D and all the shots were handheld… run and gun really, just capturing what we could as quick as we could.

BEBE Sport Campaign

without comments

I did a lot of shoots for bebe, I’ll be posting a few more over the next couple weeks, but this was one of my favorites.  I love this hard, direct lighting… it’s clean, simple and gives the photos an added sense of energy.  It was one of those days when everything went perfectly and the shoot was just easy and fun.  Love days like that! 🙂

Shooting a stock image gallery for Cosmopolitan Magazine – chris kilkus photographer christopher kilkus photographer

without comments

A while back Cosmo asked me to shoot a gallery of images they could use to illustrate men’s stories in their magazine.  It called for getting a lot of images in a day, and a few different scenarios and moods as well.  They wanted most of it to have that California vibe, so we stayed out in the sun around Santa Monica and Venice for everything.  It was a long day, but also quite fun… it always is shooting around the beach towns in SoCal!
